Abstract

Eutrophication is an important environmental problem that affects the aquatic systems, causing a deterioration in water quality. The study of uppermost sedimentary record of the eutrophic San Roque reservoir (SRr; Córdoba, Argentinian), allows the understanding of the role that sediments play in the eutrophication process. This work characterized the spatial distribution of particle size and geochemical composition of the sediment obtained in two samplings carried out in june and august 2018. Our results show that the particle size distribution responses mainly to the sedimentary river dynamics in SRr. Coarse fractions were mainly present in the areas near the rivers mouths, while fine fractions prevailed in the deep areas. In addition, most part of inorganic phosphorous, iron, manganese and total organic carbon were located in the throat of the reservoir, probably associated in the sediment. On the other hand, higher organic phosphorous and inorganic carbon content were found in the central area, related with biogeochemical process, whereas inorganic nitrogen was higher at the confluent point of Cosquín river and Las Mojarras stream, probably from anthropic origin.
