The Construction of the Mexican National Hero in the Popular Poetry of Independence

Abstract

Popular poetry of independence emerges as a central element in the construction of national heroes and the formation of the national identity of Mexico. In contrast to the epics that characterized the development of national heroes in other cultures, that specific literary and cultural void was filled in Mexico by popular poetry. This work highlights the crucial role played by authors such as Guillermo Prieto, writer of El romancero nacional, as well as other numerous and equally fundamental contributions from unknown authors. Through a documented analysis, it is revealed how these poetic expressions not only conveyed the ideals of independence, but also shaped the collective perception of heroes and the Mexican national identity, in such a way that they consolidated an invaluable cultural legacy.
