Resumen

The events that took place in Turkey during the summer of 2007 lead
us to pose many questions as to whether liberal democracy is something
more than the last product of advertised consumption for a better
spreading of occidentalization around the world following the end
of the colonial era.
One of the problems we face is being able to discern what religion
means in the relations among states according to the westfalian premise,
that is to say, the assertion that religion does not exist in international
relations. Modernity has separated religious doctrines from traditions
and this separation brought about a dilemma for non-western
states since they were deprived of their religion when faced with the
task of building their own identity which had in turn been deeply rooted
in religion. The process of secularization, i.e. separation of the concepts
of the political community from those of the religious community,
has caused an important fracture within the societies that came last
to adhere to the modernizing process that has been imposed -directly
or indirectly- by Europe since the XVI century.
