Supernumerary teeth in Córdoba, Argentina

The supernumerary teeth (SN) are those additional to the normal series, whether or not a syndrome is associated. They can be located in any area of the jaws and with different forms such as eumorphics, dysmorphic, conical, tuberculated or supplementary. The aims of this study was evaluate the frequency and characteristics of retained SN teeth in adults attended at the specialty of Buco Maxilo Facial Surgery during the period 2010-2016 of the School of Dentistry of the UNC. Sex, age, number of supernumerary teeth, location, position and morphology were recorded. It was found that 83% of the patients presented a single SN element and the rest two SN elements. When studying the location, it was found that 56% of the elements were located in the upper jaw and that 44% were mesiodents. A 37% were found in the paramolar position and the rest in other locations. The 17% of the cases studied had diastema and all cases were found in the mesodens and upper jaw. It is important the early diagnosis and its appropriate treatment to avoid clinical problems, such as complex bad position or, eventually a root resorption. Special attention should be to newborns with a family history of SN teeth.
