Abstract

In the present study salivary glands of patients dead ftom alcoholic cirrhosis were analized at histological and histochemical leve!. Parotid, submaxillar, labial and bucea! glands samples obtained from chronic alcoholics autopsies of 50 and 60 years old individuals were processed through conventional optical microscopy technics. Hematoxylin-Eosin, Gomori's Trichrome stains and Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Toluidine Blue methods were used. Acinar cells ftom parotid gland showed basophil granules bundles of different size and atypical distribution. Adipose tissue infiltration within glandular stroma was observed. Submaxillar gland showed mucous acines without granules, excretory ducts distended and with an atrophic ephitelium, light intersticial edema and vascular congestion. Acinar hipertrophy with broad ducts containing slightly basophil, metachromatic and light PAS-positive abundant secretory material was observed in labial and bucea! glands. This findings suggest that parenchyma and stroma ofmajor and minar salivary glands are affected in different degree by chronic consumption of alcohol
