Abstract

Objective: To carry out a descriptive study of the morphology and the most relevant accidents of the posterior hard palate, compare bone modifications and evaluate the anthropometric measurements in dentate and edentulous upper jaws. Methods: 40 dentate and 39 edentulous maxillae were measured in vitro using a digital caliper. The following were measured: 1) horizontal and anteroposterior diameter of both greater palatine foramina (FPM) 2) distance between the buccal bone between the upper central incisors and both FPM 3) distance between both FPM, 4) location of the FPM in relation to the molars, 5) length, width and height of the palate, 6) palatal index in % (PI), 7) palatal height index in % (PHI). Results: The distance between the buccal bone between the maxillary central incisors and the right FPM was 49.77 mm in dentate and 44.97 mm in edentulous (p < 0.05) and with respect to the left FPM it was 49.73 mm in dentate and 44.99 mm in edentulous (p < 0.05). The distance between both FPM was on average 28.06 mm in the dentate group and 28.34 mm in the edentulous group, with no significant differences between groups. Regarding the dimensions of the FPM, no significant differences were found between both groups. Significant differences were found in palatal length and height between both groups. Conclusion: The present study provides morphometric data of the region of the palatal vault of a South American population that could be useful to compare and complement other similar studies.
