Abstract

This study will form the 4th chapter of the history in preparation of Nuestra Sefiora del Valle. The origins of the miraculous statue are so confused with those of the colonization of the Valley of Catamarca that it has seemed appropriate to study this ab initio, although in broad strokes. Hence this chapter.

Author Biography

Antonio Larrouy, Seminario de Catamarca

Father Larrouy was born in 1873, in Ossen, near Lourdes (France). He was 17 years old when he arrived in Catamarca with the Lourdist Fathers who came to direct the Seminary School founded by Vicar Segura. It was in Catamarca where he concluded his ecclesiastical studies and was ordained priest in 1899 in the city of Buenos Aires. Once he finished his studies, he dedicated himself to teaching and historical research. He was linked to the most eminent historians of the time such as Mitre, Enrique Peña, among others. He was the trainer of many Argentine historians and the initiator of today's Institute of Historical Research of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires. Larrouy introduced in the historical discipline the analysis called historical criticism, which consists of the study of the background of the document and how every human work is subject to errors. He began to publish his studies in 1904. In 1912 he moved to Catamarca where he carried out numerous research works and contributed with his studies to the historiography of Catamarca.
