On cholesterin metabolism in experimental phosphate poisoning

Abstract

The study of lipoid substances has recently opened up a wide field of experimental research in pathophysiology. Their histochemical distribution in the animal economy has led to assign to lipoids a hypothetical role in the defense of the organism. This can be deduced from their preponderant presence in cell membranes, to which a protective function is undoubtedly attributed; and from the wealth of these substances in organs such as the brain, the liver, the adrenal cortex and the ovary, to whose histochemical disintegration are due such apparent effects of general intoxication of the organism.
