Abstract

For twenty-eight years my favorite studies in chemistry, both analytical and synthetic, have dealt with petroleum, and especially with Argentine petroleum. The Argentine Republic has had the good fortune to count among its great presidents the immortal Sarmiento, whose great and pure love for his country, indicated to him that the best path for the Republic to follow in its evolution would be that in which it could raise as far as possible the general intellectual level of its population, either by establishing a vast and free primary education, and consequently secondary and university education, or by encouraging the systematic promotion of a scientific investigation of nature, and especially of the conditions of its soil, its flora and fauna, as well as its minerals.
