Resumen
Pocas veces, o nunca, advertimos que el agua en las plantas se transporta cuesta
arriba, desde el suelo hasta las hojas. Mientras que, en un río o en un grifo abierto, el
agua uye cuesta abajo con facilidad. Si pretendemos que el líquido uya cuesta arriba,
necesitaremos de una bomba para transportarla, por ejemplo, desde una cisterna hasta el
tanque ubicado en el techo de nuestra vivienda. Entonces: ¿cómo hacen eso los árboles?
Junto con el auditorio, estudiantes de 10 a 12 años de edad, se construyó progresivamente la
respuesta buscada, utilizamos distintos recursos didácticos, que facilitaron la comprensión
de algunos contenidos teóricos de la física-química del agua, de la transpiración foliar, de
las características del xilema y de la pared celular.

Abstract
We rarely, if ever, notice that water in plants is transported uphill, from the soil
to the leaves. In a river, or when turning on a faucet, water ows downhill easily and
quickly. Now, if we want the water to ow uphill, we know that we will need a pump to
transport it, for example, from a cistern to the tank located on the roof of our house. So:
how do trees do that? Together with the audience, students from 10 to 12 years old, we
progressively constructed the desired answer, using different didactic resources, which
facilitated the understanding of some theoretical contents of the physic-chemistry of water,
foliar transpiration, xylem and cell wall characteristics.
