Un año, cuatro meses y siete días. Once mil ochocientas treinta y dos horas
sin ella.
Siento que fue ayer cuando la vi por última vez, su risa sonaba por
toda la habitación y sus ojos brillaban de felicidad. Recuerdo que ese día le
había dado un pequeño collar de plata con un dije en forma de un par de
alas, era dorado y tenía pequeñísimos cristales que brillaban en distintos
tonos dependiendo de dónde le diera la luz. Después de ese momento, la dejé
marchar sola. Jamás me perdonaré por no haberla seguido, a pesar de sus
negativas; yo debí acompañarla.
Aún no me acostumbro a su partida, sigo creyendo que un día
atravesará el umbral de mi casa con los pequeños pasteles que solía traerme
para que me sintiera mejor después de un día pesado. Todavía escucho cómo
sus cantos salen de la ducha y veo las sombras de sus danzas entre la sala y el
comedor. Siento la vibra de su alma sonando en el piano que le regalé en su
cumpleaños dieciocho y terminó quedándose aquí. Baggie, nuestra cachorra,
todavía sigue de pie al lado de la recámara, esperando que alguien más salga
de ahí. ¿Cómo le explico que eso ya no va a suceder? Charlie dice que debo
tener esperanza, que ella aún puede volver, pero ¿cómo será eso posible?
Mientras me hundo en los deseos más bajos de la mente, siento el
teléfono vibrar en la mesilla de noche al lado de mi cama, me arrastro entre
las sábanas hasta lograr sentirlo entre mis manos y contesto. Era él, Charlie,
dándome una corta frase en cuanto escucha mi voz: “está aquí”. Mis latidos se
paran por un segundo para pasar a la adrenalina recorriendo cada bra de mí.
Me levanto casi a tropiezos y llego hasta donde había tirado los jeans la noche
anterior. No necesitaba nada más que la voz llena de tristeza de Charlie para
saber que la habían encontrado, para saber que era ella. Ese hombre que ha
estado al lado de mí apoyándome desde que éramos niños y que, ahora, me
da la noticia más temida, la que va a hacer que mi ser se rompa o se regenere.
Al conducir hasta aquel lugar que había visitado tantas veces llenándome
de esperanza que terminaba en llantos por no ser lo esperado, mi mente seguía
en su ritual de tortura, jodiéndome el alma hasta que nada más quedara un
cascarón vacío, sin vida, sin esperanza. Entrando al edicio mis fosas nasales
se llenaron del olor tan fuerte de algún químico que desconozco, sentí el
ardor en mis fosas nasales, en la nuca, en los ojos y mis pasos se volvieron
cada vez más lentos a medida que me acercaba a la puerta que marcaría el
