The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the resolution that 2014 should be the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014) in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of X-ray crystallography. Crystallography is a technique that studies the spatial arrangement of ions, atoms or molecules, provided they are part of a crystal. The structural information is important for understanding the properties and functions of these compounds. Therefore crystallography may have applications in areas as diverse as medicine, new materials, green energy, cosmetics, foods and space technology. Given its importance, the aim of IYCr2014 is to promote crystallography through different initiatives coordinated by the International Union of Crystallography and UNESCO.
