Resumen

Alfred G. Gilman, Martin Rodbell, Robert J. Lefkowitz y Brian K. Kobilka son los nombres de reconocidos científicos estadounidenses que seguramente para quienes trabajan en áreas tales como la biología, medicina o fisiología les resultan familiares, pero probablemente no lo son tanto para el resto de las personas.

Desde el punto de vista de sus importantes contribuciones científicas, estos investigadores tienen muchos aspectos en común y que los identifican. Todos ellos han centrado sus investigaciones (y algunos aun las continúan) en torno a una familia de proteínas, muy populares por cierto en el área de las ciencias biológicas, denominadas proteínas G, así como los receptores acoplados funcionalmente a las mismas. Además, y como consecuencia de sus aportes al conocimiento sobre estas moléculas, los cuatro científicos han recibido el prestigioso Premio Nobel, otorgado por la Academia Sueca.

Este artículo tiene como propósito mencionar de manera sucinta la secuencia de descubrimientos científicos que sentaron las bases para comprender los complejos mecanismos de transducción de señales a nivel celular, particularmente aquellos relacionados a las proteínas G.

 Alfred G. Gilman, Martin Rodbell, Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian K. Kobilka are the names of four recognized American scientists that are surely familiar to those working in areas such as biology, medicine or physiology, but are probably not so well known to other people.

From the point of view of their important scientific contributions, these researchers have much in common. They have all focused their research (and some even still continue to do so) around a family of proteins called G proteins (very common indeed in the area of biological sciences) as well as on the G-protein coupled receptors. In addition, as a result of their contributions to knowledge about these molecules, the four scientists received the prestigious Nobel Prize, awarded by the Swedish Academy.

This paper aims to briefly mention the sequence of scientific discoveries that laid the foundations for the understanding of the complex mechanisms of signal transduction at the cellular level, particularly those related to G protein.
